Why worn letters feel creepier
Clean letters look like they came out of a computer yesterday. Torn, patchy edges suggest something older: a poster that sat on a basement wall for years, a photocopied warning, a tape label nobody remembers writing. Escape rooms and haunted attractions
This grunge font shines on props people hold or walk past. Door signs that say DO NOT ENTER. Clue cards. Lab warning notices. Asylum file labels. Ticket stubs for a haunted house.
- Print on off-white or kraft paper. Bright white paper fights the worn look.
- Age the paper, not the letters. The font is already distressed. A tea stain or crumple adds age without turning the words to mush.
- Laminate props that get handled. Players grab clue cards a lot. A matte laminate keeps them readable all season.
Album art and gig posters
For a punk, doom or horror-rock cover, try off-white letters on black, rotated a degree or two. Skip the extra grunge texture brushes. One more texture on top of this font and the edges stop reading. Questions people ask
Can I use the distressed font in Canva?
Yes, if your account is Canva Pro or Teams. Upload the .otf through Brand Kit, "Upload a font". Free Canva can't take custom fonts.
Is it okay for album covers, posters and shirts I sell?
Yes. Artwork for printed products you sell, social posts, videos and print-on-demand is covered by the standard license. You can't share the font file or include it in templates you sell. Read the full license.
Does Claw Rough have lowercase?
No real lowercase. Typing lowercase gives you a second, differently scratched drawing of each capital. Mixing the two makes the wear look less repeated.
Can it handle accents?
Yes. Spanish, French, German and Portuguese accents are included, such as Á É Ñ Ü Ç Ã Õ, plus ¡ ¿ ß and €.
Does it work in Google Docs?
No. Google Docs doesn't load fonts from your computer. For printed clue cards or handouts, use Word or Canva Pro instead.
Should I cut it on a Cricut?
You can, but the torn edges make lots of tiny pieces to weed. It's better for printing, sublimation and print-then-cut. For clean vinyl cuts, the smooth claw scratch font is easier.
